Percentage Calculator – 15 Tools in One: Tax, Margin, CAGR, Grades & More

This free percentage calculator goes beyond the basics. It includes 15 calculator sections covering everyday math, financial analysis, investment benchmarking, and academic grading — all with live results, copy buttons, and local currency formatting. Nothing is uploaded or stored.

Financial

Tax Calculator (Add & Extract)

Switch between two modes: add tax on top of a net amount, or extract the tax hidden inside a gross total. Most calculators only do one direction.

Financial

Profit Margin vs. Markup

Both metrics measure profitability but use different bases. Margin divides profit by the selling price; markup divides profit by the cost. This tool calculates both side by side so you never mix them up.

Investment

CAGR – Compound Annual Growth Rate

Enter a starting value, ending value, and number of years to get the equivalent annual growth rate. Also shows total return percentage. Standard for comparing investment performance.

Academic

Weighted Grade Calculator

Add up to five assignments with individual score, maximum points, and weight. Outputs a weighted average percentage and letter grade (A–F), accounting for assignments that count more than others.

Everyday

Tip & Bill Split

Enter a bill amount, tip percentage, and number of diners. See the total with tip and each person's exact share. Formatted in your local currency automatically.

Precision

High Precision Mode + Copy Buttons

Smart rounding keeps results clean by default. Toggle High precision for up to six decimal places. Every result has a copy button so you can paste into spreadsheets or documents instantly.

Most percentage calculators online cover three or four common problems. This one covers fifteen, organized into four groups: Basic (percent-of, what percent, change, original), Convert (fraction to percent, percent to fraction, percent of percent), Financial (discount, tax, tip split, profit margin and markup, CAGR), and Analysis (percentage difference, increase/decrease, weighted grade). Use the sidebar to jump directly to the section you need.

The Tax calculator is especially useful because it works in two directions. Adding tax on top of a net price is straightforward, but extracting the tax component already baked into a gross total requires dividing by (1 + rate/100) rather than multiplying. Most online tools only handle one direction. This one handles both with a simple mode toggle.

The Profit Margin and Markup calculator solves a common source of confusion in pricing and retail. Margin and markup both measure profitability from cost to price, but they use different denominators. A 50% markup (profit over cost) looks very different from a 50% margin (profit over selling price). This tool calculates both in one step and labels them clearly.

For investors and business analysts, the CAGR calculator answers the question: "What consistent annual growth rate would take me from a starting value to an ending value over N years?" Enter any starting value, ending value, and time span. The calculator outputs the CAGR and the total return percentage.

Students and teachers will find the Weighted Grade calculator useful. It handles courses where assignments have different weights, such as a final exam worth twice as much as a homework set. Enter up to five assignments with a score, maximum possible points, and weight. The result shows the weighted average and maps it to a letter grade automatically.

Real-world uses

  • Sale discounts: enter the original price and discount percentage to see the amount saved and final checkout price.
  • Sales tax: add tax to a net price or extract the tax component from a gross total shown on a receipt.
  • Retail pricing: calculate profit margin and markup simultaneously to price products correctly and avoid confusing the two metrics.
  • Investment analysis: use CAGR to compare portfolios, funds, or business revenue over different time periods on an equal footing.
  • Exam and course grades: enter weighted assignments to find a running course average and letter grade before final results are published.
  • Restaurant splits: calculate tip and divide the total bill equally among any number of people without mental math.
  • Salary raises: find the new salary after a percentage increase, or reverse it to discover what raise percentage was applied.

Frequently asked questions

What calculators are included?
Fifteen sections in total: percent of a number, what percent X is of Y, percentage change, original from percentage (reverse percent), fraction-to-percent, percent-to-fraction, percent of percent, discount, tax (add or extract mode), tip and bill split, profit margin and markup, CAGR, percentage difference, increase/decrease by percent, and weighted grade calculator with letter grade.
What is the difference between profit margin and markup?
Profit margin= (Price − Cost) / Price × 100. It measures profit as a share of the selling price. Markup= (Price − Cost) / Cost × 100. It measures profit as a share of the cost. A 50% markup on a $100 cost gives a $150 selling price, but the profit margin on that sale is only 33.3%.
What is CAGR and how is it calculated?
CAGR stands for Compound Annual Growth Rate. The formula is: (End / Begin) ^ (1 / Years) − 1, expressed as a percentage. It tells you the consistent annual rate that would take a value from its starting point to its ending point. It is widely used for investment returns and revenue benchmarking.
How do I extract tax from a total price?
Use the Tax calculator and select Extract tax from total. Enter the gross amount (price already including tax) and the tax rate. The tool divides the total by (1 + rate / 100) to recover the pre-tax base and shows how much of the total is tax.
How does the weighted grade calculator work?
Enter each assignment with a score, maximum points, and weight. The calculator converts each score to a percentage, multiplies by the weight, sums all weighted scores, and divides by total weight. The result maps to a letter grade: A (90+), B (80–89), C (70–79), D (60–69), F (below 60).
What is the difference between percentage change and percentage difference?
Percentage change uses the original value as the base: ((New − Old) / Old) × 100. Use it when one value clearly came first. Percentage difference uses the average of both values: |A − B| / ((|A| + |B|) / 2) × 100. Use it when comparing two equivalent measurements with no fixed reference point.
What is reverse percentage used for?
Reverse percentage recovers the original value before a percent was applied. If an item costs $75 after a 25% discount, the original price was $75 / 0.75 = $100. Use it whenever you know the final value and the percentage but need the starting point.
What is percent of percent used for?
Percent of percent handles stacked percentages: for example, 10% of 20% = 2%. It is useful for tax on a discounted price, commission on commission, or any scenario where one percentage applies to another rather than to a raw value.
How are currency symbols chosen automatically?
The tool reads your browser's time zone (e.g., America/New_York maps to USD, Europe/Paris maps to EUR) and selects the matching currency. No external API call or IP lookup is made, so your location stays private.
Are calculations private and secure?
Yes. Every calculation runs locally in your browser. Nothing you enter is sent to a server, logged, or stored remotely. The tool works fully offline once the page has loaded.
Does it support high precision results?
Yes. By default the tool uses smart rounding for readable output. Toggle High precision mode in the toolbar to see up to six decimal places, useful for invoice verification, financial modeling, or detailed academic submissions.
What is the formula to calculate percentage change?
Percentage change = ((New Value − Old Value) / Old Value) × 100. A positive result is an increase; a negative result is a decrease. Enter both values in the Percentage change section and the direction is labeled automatically.
How do I calculate what percentage one number is of another?
Use the X is what percent of Y section. Enter X (the part) and Y (the whole). The calculator computes (X / Y) × 100. For example, 45 is 75% of 60.
How do I convert a fraction to a percentage?
Use the Fraction to percentage section. Enter the numerator and denominator and the result appears instantly. For example, 3/8 becomes 37.5%. The reverse section converts a percentage back to its simplified fraction form.
How do I calculate a percentage discount?
Use the Discount calculator section. Enter the original price and the discount percentage to see the amount saved and the final price after the discount, formatted in your local currency.
